NY state of mind

DJ Eli is back at it for all 90s New York heads. Classic DJ Red Alert mix from 1992. Live mixshow is a great element of deejaying. I loved every minute of my 2 years on Finland national radio and I will post some audio here as soon as I have time. Mad props to Pimpu and J.A.K.

Brooklyn keep on

To make sure that I don't have to ever again answer the question "why aren't you feeling Finnish rap?" (real reason is because I'm a dick, but let's keep that on the dl) I'm giving you a 5pac of mid 90s goodies. This goes out to all you new kids on the block, DJ's Blah, Didier & Anonymous and an extra-mellow borough in the city of Espoo known as Soukka, straight in ya face from the era when sneakers were not in and it was Timbs all seasons. Plus it was straight from Brooklyn better known as Crooklyn. Pre-Rocafella when it was Guesswhyld, Tape Kingz, Stretch with the Dolo & all that.

Big Jaz feat. Jay-Z & Sauce Money - Foundation
Hillfiguz - Up On Prospect (Plaza Mob mix)
Jemini The Gifted One - Can't Stop Rockin' (Goldfinger's remix)
Lace Da Booms - Cut That Weak Shit (NYC mix)
Shadez Of Brooklyn - Change
Bonus track:
Silver Convention - You Turned Me On, But You Can't Turn Me Off

I get the paper

Here's the third attempt aka Audio 3 from 50 "Interscope" Jackson. Curtis must be really desperate at this point after two lukewarm singles as he's now pulling all the remaining tricks from his sleeve and mentioning major deejay crews in the video like "please play my record". LOL. I still remember the time when he was "too big" to give out interview to DJ's. That was like 3 years ago. Totally, dude.

50 Cent - I Get Money

Bonus track from my 2002 crate:
Governor feat. 50 Cent - My Life, My Life

I got 5 on it

Here's a 5pac of classic dancehall from my NY state of mind (12 inch) reggae crates. As inspiration to post this functioned Eli's link to brilliant "18 and Over", a request by DJ Anonymous and the fact that Funkmaster Flex, known as Aston George Taylor Jr. by his mom, produced the Rayvon hiphop mix under the alias DA BIG DAADEE. Check also the less known Sanchez & Lady G counter-version of the legendary Twice My Age which runs a good 6 minutes, the ending half being some smoked-out (?) version madness.

Mad Lion - Real Lover
Mega Banton - Sound Boy Killing
Rayvon - No Guns, No Murder (Hip Hop mix)
Sanchez & Lady G - Half My Age
Shabba Ranks - Roots & Culture

I still love H.E.R.

I just felt this had to be mentioned on my own blog as well: Funkmaster Flex killin' it. Strictly from the Golden Era. Special shoutout to Skem and Sport who brought those Stretch & Bobbito tapes to Finland back then.

Music business as usual

At least a year before a bunch of Paris Hilton wannabes were shooting a video somewhere in Hollywood in 2005, a mastermind called Cee-Lo was crafting this song originally sung by Tori Alamaze who started out as a make-up artist for acts like Outkast, TLC, Busta Rhymes and other groups. Released as a white label promo by Rockhill Productions and later signed to Universal who then re-released it, "Don't Cha" was then a fresh breath of air in modern r'n'b with its house breaks and some undercover (male) laughter hidden in the vocal track. As so often in the music biz, the song never created any buzz even though some hardcore r'n'b fans such as myself were playing it.

Tori Alamaze - Don't Cha (original long version)

Ooh child

Commodores - Girl I Think The World About You
De La Soul feat. Jungle Brothers & Q-Tip - Buddy
Taana Gardner - Heartbeat (club version)

Saturday night live

Somehow I came across this. File comin soon!

Just a quickie

Putting this up right before I'm bouncing to the club. I find myself liking this for at least two reasons: #1 Akon is not on it and #2 Vegas is on it. Whether Sean Kingston turns out to be another Akon remains to be seen. Right now I feel slightly confused and digitally polluted whenever I find an Akon track on my computers and that in turn makes me not only wanna delete the file but also bash the f out of the media it's saved on.

Mims feat. Sean Kingston, Mr.Vegas & Vybz Kartel - Like This reggae remix

Intern wanted!

I must confess that during these hot summer days I feel my nerd rating is going down real fast. I rock'n'roll from club to another and try to hang out as much as I can. Sometimes these events and specially the afterparties turn into something you can read about in books. My forefather's must be looking at the kid like slow down baby. I really do need an intern to rip vinyls on a daily basis and post 'em here in order to keep shit nerdy. I just noticed that very few posts actually contain any (good) music. I gotta get up and be a better person in the future.

Gotta get up:

Sunshine reggae

"Sony BMG uskoo jälleen dance-musiikkiin ja se on kiinnittänyt talliinsa Dej@vu-projektin, jonka ydinjoukkona toimivat vokalistit Teddy ja MC Chriss sekä tuottajat Genetix ja Max.

Teddy ja MC Chriss -kaksikko muistetaan Suomen euroviisukarsinnoista vuodelta 2005, jolloin he pyrkivät edustajiksi kappaleella Unconditional Love. Genetixin taakse puolestaan kätkeytyy pitkänlinjan dance/pop-vaikuttaja Ressu Redford.

Lisäksi 25. kesäkuuta julkaistavaa Planet Disco -albumia ovat olleet tekemässä mm. DJ Gismo, Amina Hietikko, Toni Nuotio, Matti Heininen ja Erkka Lempiäinen. Aluksi vain digitaalisesti julkaistavalla levyllä on uusia versioita 70-80-luvun disco-klassikoista kuten Super Freak (Rick James), And The Beat Goes On (The Whispers) ja Night Fever (Bee Gees).

Dej@vun ensimmäinen single Sunshine Reggae julkaistaan digitaalisesti 18. kesäkuuta. Kyseessä on cover tanskalaiselta Laid Back -kokoonpanolta.

Näytteen Sunshine Reggae -biisistä voi kuunnella yhtyeen MySpace-sivulta."

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

In the wake of Kanye's Stronger hype and my 5-day weekend I'm back at the office. Thanks to everybody who showed up at the Ihana brunch at Wave terrace yesterday plus a special shoutout to my partner in crime DJ Anonymous. I still can't quite describe the positive vibe on the sunny top floor terrace but that definitely reminded my of why I started deejaying about 10 years ago.

Wave terrace goodies:
Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (Neptunes remix) [320kbps]
Deee-Lite - What Is Love [320kbps]
DJ Spinna - Deep Rooted (unreleased demo mix) [320kbps]
Madonna - Holiday [192kbps]
